About New Zealand

New Zealand is a world leader in eco tourism, and has developed into one of the cleanest and greenest countries to visit. It is a unique land of breathtaking coastlines, golden beaches, lush rainforests, snow-capped mountains and glacier-fed lakes. Pair this with a thriving indigenous Maori culture, bustling cosmopolitan cities, traditional towns and friendly people, and you have an outstanding and unusual combination. New Zealand is an island country in the south-western Pacific Ocean comprising two main landmasses (commonly called the North Island and the South Island), and numerous smaller islands, most notably Stewart Island/Rakiura and the Chatham Islands.

When holidaying here, visit Auckland. A good starting point is the distinctive Sky Tower, which offers fantastic views of the city, its beaches, the coast and the mountain. The 'Garden City' of Christchurch is filled with neo-gothic architecture reminiscent of an old English university town. One could also look out for good bird watching spots in Taiaroa Head (near Dunedin), known for colonies of royal albatrosses, and Stewart Island, where you might catch a glimpse of the illusive kiwi. For action lovers there is adventurous Queenstown. New Zealand's main centre for outdoor sports lies on the shore of stunning Lake Wakatipu, beneath the breathtaking mountains. This is the perfect base for testing your nerves on any of the many adrenaline-fuelled activities on offer. You could also visit the Fjords indenting the lower west coast of the South Island, cruise around Milford Sound in the shadow of iconic Mitre Peak or dive into its icy-cold waters to see red and black corals.

Add world-renowned wines, wonderful cuisine, strolls on moody beaches, tramping through national parks and alpine tracks, bungee jumping, zorbing, caving and white-water rafting, and you have a wealth of thrilling experiences.

Dominated by the Maori culture visit Rotorua and see how young aboriginal Maoris’ learn the skills of traditional bone, wood and greenstone carving. Do not miss a visit to a Marae (a Maori meeting house) and enjoy a concert of traditional songs. For another unique experience, dive into a bubbling mud pool for ultimate relaxation or visit the geyser at Wai-O-Tapu. Also check out the volcanoes at Tongariro to see the explosive power of thermal eruptions.

Winters tend to be wet and cool, but there's great winter skiing in the centre of the North Island, and in the South Island's Southern Alps, where heli-skiing is particularly popular.
